King leads Triton Central to 50th Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament title

WALDRON – Class 2A, No. 8 Triton Central scored 20 points in the opening four minutes of the Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament championship game Saturday night and cruised to the program’s 39th overall title.

The Tigers’ 20-0 run to start the game led to a 43-8 advantage at halftime.

The Triton Central starters stayed in the game until late in the third quarter which allowed point guard Quinn King to nearly accrue a triple double. The junior finished with 12 points, 10 assists and nine steals and was named Most Valuable Player of the 50th Annual Shelby County Tournament.

 

 

“We just wanted to play solid and make sure we played as a team,” said King (photo) after the win. “I was just trying to make sure everybody got a chance and I try to be ready whenever they need me.”

Maryrose Felling hit four three-pointers and finished with a game-high 24 points.

Felling opened the championship with a 3 and King followed suit. Felling grabbed a rebound and scored and hit another 3 which was quickly followed by a Kate Collier 3 from the wing for a 14-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest.

Katie Theobald’s drive down the lane and score with 3:35 to go in the opening quarter finally put Morristown on the scoreboard.

 

Waldron High School was the host for the 50th Annual Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament.

 

The Yellow Jackets (8-8) put together a 5-0 run that started late in the first quarter and carried over into the opening minute of the second but the Tigers (12-3) answered with a 13-0 run to make it 37-7.

Theobald and Jayla Keithley led Morristown with seven points apiece. Keithley had a team-high five rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets have four games left on their regular season schedule. They host North Decatur (6-11) Tuesday and Indianapolis Lutheran (5-10) Thursday.

Triton Central has won seven straight and 11 of its last 12. The Tigers travel Tuesday to New Palestine (12-4).
