NIPSCO marks National 811 Day (Aug 11) and urges Hoosiers to call before digging

NIPSCO is recognizing National 811 Day on August 11 by reminding homeowners and contractors to contact 811 before starting any digging project.

Contacting 811 at least two business days before digging connects customers with Indiana’s one-call system so utilities can mark underground lines at no cost.

“National 811 Day is an important reminder that safety starts before any project begins,” said NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi. “Taking a few minutes to contact 811 before digging helps prevent outages, protects underground infrastructure and helps keep people, property and communities safe.”

Projects such as planting trees, installing mailboxes or building decks can pose risks if underground lines are not identified ahead of time. Pipelines and other utilities may be buried just inches below the surface due to shifting ground conditions.

After a request is submitted through Indiana811.org or by phone, utility crews mark underground lines so projects can proceed safely.

Homeowners and contractors should plan ahead by contacting 811 at least two business days before digging, waiting for all markings to be completed and verifying flags and paint before starting work. These steps help ensure projects are completed safely from the start.

If a natural gas line is damaged or a gas odor is detected, stop work immediately, leave the area, and call 911.
