Hospital evacuated after bomb threats in Plymouth

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Lake Avenue was evacuated Monday night after hospital staff received two bomb threats, prompting a multi-hour emergency response that extended into early Tuesday morning.

Plymouth Police Officers arrived at the medical facility at approximately 7:15 p.m. on February 23, following reports of telephone calls made directly to the hospital claiming bombs had been placed inside the building.

Officers immediately coordinated with hospital staff to begin evacuating patients and employees from the facility. The large-scale emergency response required assistance from multiple agencies, including the Plymouth Fire Department, K9 units from both LaPorte and Porter counties, and the South Bend Police Department Bomb Squad.

After an extensive search of the premises, authorities gave the all-clear shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24. No explosive devices were found, and the building was deemed safe.

Plymouth Police confirmed that an investigation into the identity and whereabouts of the caller is ongoing.

The incident caused significant disruption to hospital operations during the evening hours. Our news partners at WSBT said six patients were transferred to the Mishawaka Hospital and one to the hospital in Bremen.
