Fulton County schools receive $83,000 grant for safety enhancements

Fulton County schools recently received received more than $83,000 for safety upgrades thanks to the states Secured School Safety Grant Program supported by State Rep. Jack Jordan (R-Bremen).

The funds come from part of the $27 million investment legislation has committed to school safety this year intended for 494 Indiana schools, who aim to use the money to standardize and better coordinate measures taken to safeguard schools across the state. Indiana has invested in more than $214 million in school safety since the program was created in 2013. 

It was announced Rochester Community School Corporation received $46,250 and Caston School Corporation received $37,000. 

Jordan said the awarded funds can be used for a wide range of safety needs including equipment, technology, active event warning systems, student-parent support service programs and support for school resource officers. 

"School security is more than just installing cameras and upgrading locks and windows," Jordan said. "It's creating a culture of safety where students and staff feel protected. These grants will help our local schools make safety upgrades to accomplish that goal."

This year lawmakers also advanced legislation to move the Office of School Safety to the Department of Homeland Security as a way to centralize safety efforts to provide additional support and further resources to schools.
