There is some good news regarding healthcare in Illinois in the new year of 2026.
The state is set to receive close to $200 million through the Federal Rural Health Transormation Program. The Trump administration announced the infusion of funds to support rural healthcare.
Hospitals across the state including locally are anticipated to get over $193 million this year as part of the program. The new money could be used in a variety of ways-the expansion of women's health services, primary care, telehealth and virtual care options for those who have difficulty with transportation to and from the hospital.
Nearly 2 million people live in rural areas of Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Health and Human Services. The new funding arrives at a critical time, as many rural hospitals face increasing challenges such as declining Medicaid enrollment and ongoing staff shortages.
