Both the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) are reminding Lawrence County drivers and farmers about traffic safety on roadways this fall harvest season.
Agriculture is one of the leading industries in southeastern Illinois and farmers locally and across the area will be moving their equipment along roads throughout the coming months. As farmers travel between fields during the busy harvest period, motorists should be vigilant for the large, slow-moving combines, tractors and other farm equipment. Those driving should slow down, watch their speed, be prepared for sudden turns by farm equipment and allow for extra travel time.
The latest Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) crash statistics indicate that there were 276 accidents involving farm tractors or equipment in the year 2025. By staying alert and making safety a priority, the harvest season will be made safer for everyone.
