Gold Star Dance Studio cleared its first hurdle to finding a permanent home in Shelbyville.
The property at 1115 St. Joseph Street near Hendricks Elementary has been purchased and now the land must be rezoned to accommodate the dance studio.
Formerly The Ville Church, the building on site at 1115 St. Joseph St. is part of an 1.38 acre parcel that is not currently being used.
For the dance studio to exist on site the land must be rezoned to Business General. The Shelbyville Common Council approved that request Monday 7-0 on first reading.
The next step is for the dance studio to present before the Plan Commission next week for a favorable recommendation that would then be sent back to the common council for final approval.
In other council business Monday:
- Approved on second reading a wheel and excise tax that will increase funding for the city to maintain and repair roads. This is not a new tax on city residents. The fee is already being charged by the county and assessed by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The new tax allows the city to capture more dollars.
- Announced 11 students and three adults from Japan would arrive late Tuesday night to spend several days visiting Shelbyville. The visit is part of the city’s sister city program with Shizuoka City.
