A child is in fair condition at Riley Hospital after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Just after 12 p.m. Friday, New Palestine officers were dispatched to the 2400 block South of Carlota Drive regarding a person shot. When officers arrived on scene a 5-year-old child was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers on scene immediately began to render medical aid until Sugar Creek Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. The child was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital and was last reported in fair condition.
After collecting evidence and statements on scene from witnesses, officers believe this to be an accident. Nothing further was released as to how the shooting occurred or the child gained control of the gun. This is an ongoing investigation; any further updates will be released via the New Palestine Police Department.
