As part of an expansion project at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a portion of Hendricks Street that runs behind the Shelbyville church will be vacated.
At Tuesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting at City Hall, temporary closure for 120 days of Hendricks St. from Center and Noble streets was approved. That will allow work on the job site to begin.
The church has purchased several parcels of land near the church that is separated by Hendricks St.

In August, the Shelbyville Plan Commission approved the site development plan for a new campus layout for the church, located at 125 E. Broadway. That plan includes a new building on the southwest corner of the property and the addition of more parking spaces.
Hendricks St. will remain one way eastbound until Center Street, which will become one way south to Taylor St.
The city is currently working to “officially” vacate the Hendricks St. portion to the church at a later date. The Shelbyville Common Council will make the final approval of the vacation.
