Blue River Community Foundation announces 2026 Spirit of Community Award recipients

Blue River Community Foundation (BRCF) is proud to announce the recipients of its 2026 Spirit of Community Awards: Donna Harrell and Hoosier Landmarks for Learning.

Presented annually, the Spirit of Community Awards recognize individuals and nonprofit organizations whose generosity, leadership, and dedication make Shelby County a stronger place to live. The individual award honors an outstanding person whose service and giving have made a lasting impact, while the nonprofit award recognizes an organization committed to bringing about positive change in the community.

As part of the recognition, the individual recipient directs a $1,000 grant to the nonprofit organization of their choice, and the nonprofit recipient also receives a $1,000 unrestricted grant. Both recipients’ picture will be displayed on a billboard in downtown Shelbyville for the remainder of the summer.

Donna Harrell is being recognized for more than 36 years of service to the Cancer Association of Shelby County, including 19 years as a volunteer. Inspired by her mother's courageous battle with cancer, Donna transformed a personal experience into a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Throughout her years of service, Donna has offered hope, encouragement, and practical support to countless Shelby County residents and their families during some of life's most difficult moments.

One nominator wrote, "Donna's mission has always been deeply personal. Inspired by her mother's courageous battle with cancer, she transformed her compassion into a lifetime of service for the people of Shelby County."

Her granddaughter, Haley Casey, shared how Donna's example has shaped her own life.

"I learned from an incredibly young age that she was here to make a difference and cared for others with such a devoted heart. My grandma has always been a dedicated hard worker. She truly loves everyone that walks through her door and would do anything for others."

Hoosier Landmarks for Learning is being recognized for transforming the historic Meltzer Schoolhouse into a vibrant community resource that celebrates local history while providing free educational opportunities for residents of all ages.

The organization has created a welcoming space where families can explore thousands of donated books, children can discover a love of reading, and visitors can connect with the area’s rich heritage.

Community members praised the organization for preserving an important piece of local history while making it relevant for future generations.

One nomination described the schoolhouse as "a learning environment for all ages" and "an incredible community experience." Another wrote, "The schoolhouse is more than an old building, it's a gathering place that connects people through shared memories, local heritage, and community events."

"The Spirit of Community Awards shines a light on the people and organizations that make Shelby County special," said Jennifer Jones, Executive Director of BRCF. "Donna Harrell and Hoosier Landmarks for Learning demonstrate what is possible when compassion, service, and a commitment to community are put into action. We are honored to celebrate their contributions and the positive impact they continue to make. They inspire us all to continue supporting our neighbors and elevating the quality of life in Shelby County. "
