American Red Cross declares national blood crisis — local donation opportunities available this week

The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis for only the second time in its history, and officials are urging donors to act immediately as the shortage continues to escalate and patients are already feeling the impact.

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, and despite thousands of people stepping up since the emergency was declared earlier this month, donations are still not keeping pace with hospital demand. The situation is especially dire for type O blood — the universal donor type relied upon in emergencies — with the Red Cross now limiting distributions of type O blood products to hospitals. The supply of type O positive blood has dropped below a one-day supply.

Extreme heat, poor air quality, and widespread foodborne illnesses have all contributed to lower donor turnout this summer, compounding an already critical situation.

All blood types are needed. Donors who give by July 31 will receive a Fandango Movie Ticket by email, valued at up to $15 in ticket price and fees. Those who come to give between August 1 and August 31 will receive a $20 Amazon Gift Card by email.

Marshall County residents have several upcoming opportunities to help end the crisis close to home. On Wednesday, July 29, there will be two drives — one in Bremen at St. Isidore Hall, 803 West Bike Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and one in Plymouth at the Plymouth Fire Department, 111 North Center Street, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Additional drives are scheduled for Thursday, August 13. A drive will be held in Culver at the Culver-Union Township Public Library, 107 North Main Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and in Plymouth at the Plymouth Columbus Club, 901 East Jefferson Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

To book an appointment to give blood, download the Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
