Waldron tennis moved into position to capture its third sectional championship in four seasons with a 3-2 semifinal win Wednesday over Shelbyville.
The Mohawks will face Morristown, a 5-0 winner over Southwestern, in the Shelbyville Sectional championship match today at 5 p.m.
Waldron defeated the Golden Bears, 4-1, early in the 2026 season but a 17-win Shelbyville squad rolled through September and early October with the goal of winning its first sectional title since 2022. To do so, meant flipping two matches into wins against Waldron.
Kashton Laycock raced out to a 5-2 lead in the first set at No. 1 singles against Waldron’s Charlie Fischer but the senior settled in and battled back to take the first set in a tiebreaker. He cruised through the second set for a 7-6 (5), 6-0 victory to secure his program record 71st career win.
At No. 1 doubles, Waldron’s Jackson Kuhn and Caige Sheaffer defeated Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed, 6-3, 6-3.
And freshman Noah Leap repeated his early season win over Kody Sellers at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (3) to get the Mohawks its third match win.
Shelbyville’s Bram Kolkmeier collected win No. 21 this season at No. 2 singles with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-5 win.
Owen Shively and Grant Tackett avenged a No. 2 doubles loss to the Mohawks with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Wyatt Armstrong and Owen Hartman.
In the other semifinal Wednesday, three of the four matches contested went to three sets.
At No. 1 singles, Eli Graves defeated Brinnyn Moss, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Mitchell Ronan produced a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kently Gosser at No. 2 singles.
Southwestern forfeited at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, Braxton Lenning and Ruston Kleine lost the first set but recovered for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Jesse Wilkins and Ryder Scott.
Arik Trattner and Ethan Tryon defeated Liam Tsukono and Gavin Shuppert at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-4.
