Indiana’s all-time richest Quarter Horse just got a little richer.
Mr Michel (photo), the chestnut phenom from the Claudio Barraza barn, earned his 18th career win and boosted his career earnings tally to more than $757,000 Tuesday in the third running of the Carter Riley Overnight Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
The race is named in honor of Indiana Hall of Fame Jockey Carter Riley, who won the inaugural pari-mutuel Quarter Horse race aboard Easys Night Beat in 1997.
Mr Michel began from post one for his second start of the season and was all business when the gate opened. Guided by regular jockey Edgar Diaz, the strong son of Kiss My Hocks was vying for the early lead right beside After School and Alberto Ceron.
Midway through the 350-yard dash, After School, put a head in front of Mr Michel but he quickly fought back. As the wire neared, so did late closer TW Trumps Secrets and Diego Villamil Bocanegra, who got a nose ahead before Mr Michel fought back again, this time reaching the wire first by a neck in 17.989 seconds.
TW Trumps Secrets was second over Apolitical Wagon and Giovani Vazquez Gomez for third.

Mr Michel was the heavy favorite, paying $2.60 for the win. The now seven-year-old gelding is owned by Alberto Valadez. It was the 13th career stakes victory for the Grade 1 winner and his second in the Carter Riley Overnight Stakes as he was the winner of the inaugural event in 2024. Diaz has ridden him to seven of his career wins.
The 24th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse extends through Nov. 13.
Quarter Horse racing is highlighted on five more days throughout the season. The next all-Quarter Horse Day is set for June 27 with a first post time of 10:45 a.m. at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
