Kaboom surprises in $150,000 Indiana First Lady at Horseshoe Indianapolis

Kaboom and Joseph Bealmear unleashed a wicked final quarter move on the field in the 24^th running of the $150,000 Indiana First Lady Friday at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

An overjoyed Bealmear let out a loud scream as the duo crossed under the wire for the win, a big victory for the jockey who is only in his third full year of riding.

Kaboom is not known for his early speed and settled near the back of the pack in the one mile, 70 yard race. Uncles Lil Trophy and Fernando De La Cruz grabbed the top spot early in the tightly packed field around the first turn. Country Embrace and Alex Achard sat to the outside in second with race favorite Grand Harbor and Oscar Villarreal in along the rail, eventually settling in third.

Uncles Lil Trophy continued to lead the way into the final turn as the field began to tighten up. Bealmear had Kaboom on the move on the far outside and began to come into the picture midway through the turn. Uncles Lil Trophy continued to lead the way down the stretch as Kaboom was making a big move on the outside.

It took the final strides to overtake Uncles Lil Trophy, but Kaboom accomplished her goal in the final strides, giving Bealmear reason to celebrate at the wire with a three-quarter length advantage over Uncles Lil Trophy. Sweet Summertime and Mitchell Murrill finished third over Eltinge and Marcelino Pedroza Jr., both closing in the lane.

The disqualification of Uncles Lil Trophy due to an incident in the first turn moved Sweet Summertime to second place and Uncles Lil Trophy back to third. Time of the race was 1:44.42.

Kaboom paid $14.00 for the win. The chestnut daughter of Tapiture is a homebred for Mike and Penny Lauer out of their mare Imallaboutthatbass, who ran two seasons for them before joining their brood mare band. Penny owns the three-year-old filly while Mike trains.

It was the first win of the season for Kaboom and her second overall. She has been competing at the top level of premier races the past two seasons, earning her first premier win in the $150,000 Indiana First Lady. She joins half-sister Allaboutthatimage as a premier racing winner for the Lauer team.
