Collegiate Update: Marian women's basketball captures 11th Crossroads League championship

With wins over Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington, Marian clinched the women’s basketball program’s 11th Crossroads League title and earned an automatic berth into the NAIA Tournament.

On Wednesday, Marian defeated Indiana Wesleyan, 69-53. Olivia Faust, a Triton Central graduate, had two points, two rebounds and one assist for the victorious Knights.

Marian secured the conference championship outright Saturday with a 72-47 win over Huntington. Faust finished with six points, one rebound and one assist.

The Knights (26-2, 16-2 Crossroads League) also secured the top seed in the Crossroads League postseason tournament, which starts this week.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level:

Avram Rund

The Triton Central graduate lost a pair of No. 5 singles matches for Franklin College in 7-0 losses at Wabash and at Millikin.

On Saturday at Wabash, Rund was defeated 6-1, 6-1 b Eric Tien.

Millikin’s Jorge Aura topped Rund 6-1, 6-1 Sunday.

Franklin is 1-3 in spring matches.

Corbin Deck and Layne Pogue

The Shelbyville graduates helped Franklin College volleyball secure its first sweep in program history.

On Saturday, the Grizzlies defeated Maranatha Baptist, 25-10, 25-9, 25-13. Deck had a team-high eight kills and added one block and seven digs. Pogue finished with eight assists and three blocks.

Midway then defeated Franklin, 23-25, 25-18, 16-25, 27-25, 17-15 on Saturday. Deck had 14 kills, one block and five digs.

The Grizzlies are 2-8 this season.

Brayden Basey

The Shelbyville graduate reached base twice (walk, hit by pitch) and scored a run Tuesday for Christian Brothers in a 5-4 win over Lane College in Memphis, Tennessee.

On Saturday, Basey, an outfielder, drove in Christian Brothers’ only run of the game in a 10-1 loss at the University of West Florida.

Christian Brothers is 2-10 this season.

Charlie Rife

The Shelbyville graduate had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run Sunday in Bellarmine’s 18-8 loss at Georgia State.

Rife reached base twice and scored a run Saturday in a 9-3 loss to Georgia State.

The Knights are 2-5 this season.

Hayden May

The Triton Central graduate pitched 1.2 innings in relief on Feb. 16 and allowed two hits, one walk and two runs in Vincennes University’s 17-12 loss to Schoolcraft College.

Vincennes is 5-6.

Cheyenne Eads

The Shelbyville graduate improved to 5-0 this season with wins in the circle against West Liberty and Findlay at The Highlands Classic in Tridelphia, West Virginia.

On Friday, Eads pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out nine in the University of Indianapolis’ 7-4 win over West Liberty. She returned to the circle Saturday and worked six innings and struck out six in a 6-0 win over Findlay. She also had a double and drove in two runs.

The Greyhounds defeated Wheeling, 16-0, Friday in its second game of the day. Eads walked and scored a run.

In the finale Saturday, Indianapolis defeated Indiana (Pennsylvania), 4-3.

The Greyhounds, ranked No. 15 nationally, are 10-0.

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate became just the second Kentucky softball player to hit for the cycle. On Friday in an 11-0 win over Northern Illinois, Hamilton had a single, a double, a triple and a home run and drove in three runs.

Hamilton had hits in all six Kentucky games last week. The Wildcats defeated Murray State, 4-2, on Tuesday, and added Blues City Invitational wins over North Carolina A&T, 5-0, Bradley, 7-3, Memphis (7-1) and Indiana State (8-0) to go with the Northern Illinois victory.

Hamilton is hitting a team-leading .426 with 11 extra-base hits for Kentucky (12-4).

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate had two hits, including a walkoff triple, Saturday in LSU’s 2-1 win over Louisiana Lafayette in the Purple & Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

LSU also defeated Michigan State twice and Howard to improve to 12-4 this season.

Bella Larrison

The Waldron graduate scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds Wednesday in an 83-53 win over Bluffton in the Ravens’ regular-season finale.

Anderson opened the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday with a 75-68 win over Rose-Hulman. Larrison finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and one block.

Anderson (17-9) will play Franklin College Friday in the semifinal round of the tournament in Lexington, Kentucky.

Emma Nelson

The Morristown graduate had six points, seven rebounds and three blocks Saturday in Marian Ancilla’s 54-37 win over Lake Michigan College.

On Thursday, Nelson had two points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in a 73-34 win over Community Christian (Michigan).

Marian is 16-10 this season.

Tenleigh Phelps

IU South Bend wrapped up the No. 3 seed for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament with three wins last week.

On Feb. 16, the Titans defeated IU Northwest, 65-46. Phelps, a Triton Central graduate, had 11 points, six rebounds and one assist.

Two nights later, IU South Bend topped Calumet College of St. Joseph, 72-66. Phelps finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

On Saturday, the Titans bested Governors State University, 56-47. Phelps had 23 points, seven rebounds and one assist.

The Titans are 21-7 this season and finished 16-4 against conference opponents.

Brooklyn Bailey

The Triton Central graduate had six points and six rebounds Saturday in Kaskaskia College’s 60-33 win over Spoon River College.

Kaskaskia improved to 8-20 this season.
