For the first time since 2015, the Lawrenceville basketball Indians are champions of the Lawrence County Capital Classic.
They held off the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes 56-51 Saturday night at Lawrenceville High School to pick up the first-place trophy. The Tribe went unbeaten at 4-0 over the two-day tournament. Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) Zander Cessna led the scoring with 12 points and Jayden Goff added 10 in the win. Those two, along with teammates Noah Wilson and Jacek Mickiewicz were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Hill basketball Salukis dropped all four of their games in the tournament to fall to 1-4 on the season. They lost the 7th-place contest Saturday to the Salem Wildcats 71-62. Marcus Davis of the Salukis was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Both teams return to action Tuesday. The Indians will host Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville (OPH) at Lawrenceville, and the Salukis will entertain the Grayville Bison at Bridgeport.
