Lawrence R. Stewart, 90

Lawrence R. Stewart, a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, loyal friend, and proud veteran, passed away on July 23, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born and raised in Terre Haute, Indiana, Lawrence was the sixth of eight children of Otho C. Stewart and Ruby (Sims) Byers, formerly Stewart.

Lawrence served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, beginning his service aboard the USS Timbalier and continuing with Aviation Technical Training at the Naval Support Activity Mid-South base. Following his discharge in January 1956, Lawrence returned home and married the love of his life, Sharon L. Fouts, on August 11 of that year. Together, they built a life rooted in love, adventure, and family—raising three children: Mark, Karen, and Greg.

He dedicated 35 years to Public Service Indiana (now Duke Energy), where he served as lead Instrument Technician. Starting at the Wabash River Power Plant and later transferring to the Cayuga Power Plant, Lawrence was a respected and vital part of the team, contributing to the advancement and reliability of electric service throughout the region.

More than anything, Lawrence cherished time with his family. He and Sharon instilled a love of travel and exploration in their children and grandchildren, making countless memories on road trips across the country. These adventures became treasured family traditions and created a legacy of closeness and curiosity that endures through generations.

Lawrence is survived by his children: Mark (Jennifer) of Kingsport, TN; Karen (Brett Letkowski) of Wichita, KS; and Greg (Lynette) of Terre Haute, IN; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon, his parents and six of his siblings.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Roselawn Memorial. A graveside service will follow at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, where Lawrence will be laid to rest with full military honors.

To honor Lawrence’s memory and his lifelong affection for animals, the family kindly asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society. Contributions may be made online at tths.org or brought to the visitation service.
