The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department contacted the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post Tuesday night requesting assistance with a domestic situation involving a shooting and barricaded subject near South 4th Street in Merom.
Upon officers' arrival, they discovered a female subject with multiple gunshot wounds. She was immediately taken to a local hospital and was then flown via air ambulance to a hospital in Indianapolis for further medical care. Her injuries are non-life threatening.
The alleged shooter, Tony G. Maree, 53, of Merom, had barricaded himself inside a residence near South 4th Street. Officers set up a perimeter around the residence and Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt requested further assistance from the Terre Haute Police Department Emergency Response Team. The response team made several verbal and tactical attempts to contact Maree, with no success. Since Maree was unresponsive, the team made entrance into the residence and located Maree deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation is being conducted by Indiana State Police detectives, Jason Schoffstall, and Ryan Winters, with the assistance of Sergeant Michael Featherling, CSI Sergeant Michael Organ, and CSI Sergeant Tim Rader of the Putnamville Post.
The family has been notified.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, Shelburn Town Marshall, Sullivan City Police Department, Sullivan County Department of Child Services, Sullivan County Coroner’s Office, and SCAT-1 assisted at the scene.
Upon the completion of the investigation, Indiana State Police detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
