The Shelbyville Board of Zoning Appeals approved six development standard variances Tuesday for GMX Real Estate Group’s proposed Wawa convenience store and fueling station.
Located at 825 E. State Road 44 at the corner of Amos Road and Indiana State Road 44, the new Wawa convenience store also will have eight fueling pumps.
The property is the former site of Heritage Automotive.
The development standard variances were for driveway standards, setback standards for parking lots, parking lot perimeter requirements, and foundation plantings.
No timetable was discussed for when the project will break ground.
The site development plan must now be approved by the Plan Commission. Its next scheduled meeting is Aug. 25.
Wawa opened its first Indiana location on July 10 in Indianapolis. That location is the fourth of eight Wawa stores scheduled to open in Indiana by the end of 2025 with additional locations in Brownsburg, Cumberland, Plainfield and Westfield.
Wawa projects opening 8-12 stores per year, reaching 60 stores in Indiana over the next six years.
In other board business Tuesday, the building that formerly housed Western Supermarket will become a climate-controlled indoor storage unit business after receiving a use variance allowing for such business on site.
David Phares II wants to create an indoor storage business at 1406 S. Miller Avenue with approximately 32 to 35 storage units on site at the 10,000 square-foot facility.
