The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department recently sent a fundraising mailer to 8,400 businesses and residences in their coverage area.
While the City of Plymouth provides for the fire department, there are times when the volunteers need additional gear, equipment, or training that isn’t covered in the regular budget. That is where the volunteer organization steps in to help.
Outfitting a firefighter to battle a blaze costs over $5,000. The helmet and Nomex hood cost about $550, and the coat cost $1,980. Gloves and a flashlight add another $225, while the pants cost $1780, and fire boots cost $480. Equipment costs have increased: A thermal imaging camera, used to see through smoke and walls to find trapped people, pets, and hot spots, costs $7500, and the self-contained breathing apparatus costs $7,200.
Everyone expects the fire truck to roll up when they have an emergency, and the bulk of that crew is comprised of volunteer firefighters. These men and women need the equipment, gear, and training necessary to do their jobs safely.
The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a special fund drive in place of the casino stag and firemen ball of years past. They are asking faithful supporters to donate at least $35 with the hopes of raising $35,000. Anyone who donates at least $35 will receive a special thank-you from the department: a professional 8x10 portrait from Superior Portraits. They will be at the Plymouth Fire Department on Saturday, November 9th, to take professional portraits of families, individuals, or pets.
