US Senators Young, Peters resolution recognizing April as National Safe Digging Month passes Senate

The United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution authored by U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.) marking April 2026 as National Safe Digging Month.

“As Chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Maritime, Freight, and Ports, I’m proud to cosponsor this resolution designating April as National Safe Digging Month. With the weather getting warmer and excavation projects increasing, it is important to remember to call before you dig,” said Senator Young.

“When underground utility lines are unintentionally damaged, it threatens the safety of both workers and our environment, while interrupting essential services that communities depend on,” said Senator Peters. “I’m proud to again help lead this initiative to establish April as National Safe Digging Month to advocate for safe digging practices that protect Michiganders and utility workers as they build and maintain our critical infrastructure.”

Each year, underground utility infrastructure – including pipelines, electrical lines, and telecommunications cables – is unintentionally damaged during excavation projects. Common Ground Alliance (CGA) established National Safe Digging Month to raise awareness of safe digging practices like the “One Call” policy, which encourages homeowners and excavators to dial “811” before starting a project to obtain information regarding the location of utility lines. The resolution designates April as National Safe Digging Month to support safety and awareness efforts during the peak period when excavation projects are carried out across the country.

In addition to Senators Young and Peters, U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) are also co-sponsors of the resolution.
