Former Lawrence County resident Ray Tate has filed a motion to withdraw guilty pleas and vacate sentences handed down in Clinton County, Illinois.
He appeared recently in court there for a pretrial hearing on multiple offenses related to his capture by local authorities.
Tate surprised everyone by waiving his right to trial and entering guilty pleas to felony charges of aggravated kidnapping, home invasion and aggravated possession of stolen firearms. The pleas were accepted and the presiding judge sentenced him to 30 years each on the kidnapping and home invasion counts and 10 years on the firearms county to run concurrently.
However, Tate has now made the decision to move to withdraw and vacate his pleas and sentences.
A date to hear the motion has not been set in Clinton County Circuit Court.
Tate is still serving a life sentence without parole in Wayne County, Illinois for the December 2021 shooting death of Sheriffs Deputy Sean Riley back in December of 2021.
