The city of Sumner will continue to have its trash collection services done by Republic Services.
Tuesday evening, the city council followed the recommendation of city administrator Travis Trainer and voted to create an ordinance granting the exclusive franchise rights to the company on a one-year contractual agreement. The contract does call for a $1.25 raise in fees for residential customers up to $12.75 and will go into effect at the end of the current collection agreement.
Trainer also updated the council on the awarding of a $450,000 infrastructure improvement grant to the city from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). He will be meeting at the end of the week with IDOT and Lawrence County officials to discuss the parameters of the project. If all goes well, it is hoped a grant agreement can be signed at the end of October. Bids could be let in the spring of 2026 with the start of work anticipated in mid-summer or early fall.
