Step back to Hollywood's Golden Age: REES Theatre screens Shirley Temple Classic "Curly Top"

Long before streaming services and smartphone screens, there was Shirley Temple — the dimpled, curly-haired darling whose boundless energy lit up movie theaters during Hollywood's Golden Age. Now, area seniors have a chance to rediscover her magic on the big screen.

The REES Theatre continues its popular Seasoned Citizen Film Series on Wednesday, September 9th at 2 p.m. with a screening of the 1935 classic Curly Top, starring Shirley Temple alongside John Boles and Rochelle Hudson.

Directed by Irving Cummings, Curly Top is a heartwarming musical comedy-drama that follows young Elizabeth Blair, an energetic orphan whose lively spirit captures the attention of wealthy trustee Edward Morgan. When Morgan takes Elizabeth and her older sister Mary under his care, their lives are transformed — setting the stage for plenty of music, laughter, and a little matchmaking along the way.

The film also features one of Temple's most memorable musical numbers, "Animal Crackers in My Soup," a song that still sparks smiles nearly a century after it first delighted audiences.

The Seasoned Citizen Film Series was created especially for guests ages 55 and older, offering an affordable afternoon of entertainment and fellowship at The REES. Admission is $8 per person and includes a movie ticket, popcorn, and a drink — a throwback to the days when a trip to the movies didn't require a second mortgage.
