The Shelby County Swift Water Rescue team was dispatched to the Flat Rock River Sunday at approximately 4:07 p.m. to assist a stranded kayaker.
Personnel were able to execute a successful rescue operation with no injuries reported.
The operation was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Flat Rock Volunteer Fire Department provided critical support throughout the incident, assisting with scene management, safety operations and communication.
The Shelby County Swift Water Rescue Team is specially trained and equipped to respond to emergencies in fast moving and hazardous water conditions.
As the weather warms and more residents head to local rivers and waterways, Shelbyville Fire Department urges all individuals engaging in water recreation to wear properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets at all times.
Even strong swimmers can be caught off guard by swift currents, debris or unexpected changes in water levels.
“Life jackets save lives. Today’s rescue serves as a reminder of how quickly situations on the water can turn dangerous,” said Lt. Bradley Rund. “Preparation and safety precautions make all the difference.”
