As Potawatomi Wildlife Park approaches the close of another remarkable year, they are inviting the community to join their end-of-year campaign, Rooted in Community, Growing with Nature. This campaign celebrates the park’s deep connection to the local community, showcasing the stories and memories of those who have been part of their journey. They encourage everyone to share their own experiences with them via email as they highlight those personal connections.
Today, they share the story of Holly Seller (Heckamen), whose family has deep roots in the park.
“Potawatomi Park is not only a part of our community, it is a part of our family,” says Holly. “My grandparents used to own part of the park, and my dad has stories of growing up there with his brothers, getting into all kinds of mischief. I have my own memories of golf cart rides and hot dog roasts. The park has a way of bringing people together and creating these core memories. Some of my favorite times were spent participating in the annual fishing derby with my grandpa. When he passed, we honored him by donating a bench in his memory. It’s a blessing to sit there, relax, and reminisce.”
Holly continues, “The park is such a valuable resource for our community. Our family enjoys volunteering at various events and learning more about the park’s efforts. We truly appreciate all the hard work put into maintaining the trails, making it a peaceful place to spend the day. Many local children have benefited from field trips to the park, where they can learn about nature firsthand. If you haven’t visited yet, we highly encourage you to do so—Potawatomi Wildlife Park is a hidden gem!”
In line with the park’s mission to connect people to nature, local history, and community through low-impact recreation and educational programming, Potawatomi Wildlife Park remains committed to fostering these essential connections. With a vision of becoming a thriving community hub, they continue to offer opportunities for people of all ages to engage with the natural world.
