Moore was driving to an off-duty assignment when he saw a car crash on I-74, where a vehicle had swerved off the road, hit a tree and caught fire.
State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville) today presented Shelbyville police officer Devin Moore with a Circle of Corydon Award for his heroic actions taken to pull two individuals from a burning vehicle earlier this year.
Meltzer said last February Moore was driving to an off-duty assignment when he saw a car crash on I-74, where a vehicle had swerved off the road, hit a tree and caught fire. Moore quickly responded, pulling both the driver and passenger of the crashed vehicle out of the wreckage. Unfortunately, one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was moved to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.
"It takes courage and selflessness beyond measure to face an emergency like Officer Moore did to help save lives," Meltzer said. "He's an example of excellency in public safety, and I, along with so many others in our community, are extremely grateful to have heroes like him on our police force."
Shelbyville Police Chief Bill Dwenger said Moore's actions that morning showed his dedication to protecting his community and showed the benefits of his training.
"Officer Moore showed extraordinary courage and bravery," Dwenger said. "His actions exemplify what the police profession stands for: to serve and protect."
The Circle of Corydon Award was established by the governor in 2017 to recognize Hoosiers who have made remarkable contributions to the betterment of Indiana and its people, demonstrating through life and service qualities exemplified by the state’s greatest citizens. This is the only award issued and signed jointly by members of both the executive and legislative branches.
