Phase II complete on Parke County Rail Trail

The public is invited to take part in a piece of history Tuesday in Parke County when it comes to the Parke County Rail Trail.

The Parke Trails Alliance is inviting everyone to a ceremony commemorating the end of Phase II of the trail on July 14 at 10 a.m. at the trailhead, 7598 South Catlin Road. The ceremony will include a walk on the trail, as well as a ribbon cutting ceremony. Parking will be available at the trailhead and through an open access gate.

Phase II has added another two and a half miles of new trail that will connect Jessup Road to Catlin Road. The Parks Trail Alliance said this brings the county one step closer to realizing a countywide trail network that not only links communities but also enhances recreation opportunities and preserves local history.

“This project represents years of planning, partnership, and community support,” said Parke Trails Alliance Project Manager Mark Davis. “Phase II demonstrates what can happen when volunteers, local governments, landowners, donors, and trail advocates work together toward a shared vision. We are excited to welcome the public to experience this incredible addition to the Parke Community Rail Trail.”

Phase II features a restored historic bridge in Parke County, as well as a look back at former railroad corridors.
