A search for a person from Vigo County ended in Shelbyville with that person dying from a self-inflicted gunshot.
On Thursday, the Shelbyville Police Department was notified by the Indiana Gaming Police regarding a person of interest from Terre Haute who had left their property in a vehicle. Officers were advised that there was an active search warrant for the vehicle, described as a dark blue Chevrolet pickup truck, and that it was believed to be traveling south toward Shelbyville.
Shelbyville Police officers began searching the area and located the truck parked in the Church of the Nazarene parking lot on South State Road 9. Additional officers responded to assist, and officers attempted to make contact with the occupant of the vehicle. During the encounter, the occupant produced what appeared to be a shotgun and discharged a single round, resulting in a self-inflicted fatal injury.
No officers discharged their firearms, and no law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as appropriate for the ongoing investigation.
