While the 105th annual Parke County 4-H Fair may have kicked off on July 11, festivities and more begin in earnest this week at the County Fairgrounds.
"We are always really excited. There is always something new, and then you have the classic things. We are always excited about it," Parke County Fair Board Secretary Jennifer Conley told The Parke County Post.
While the county fair features the standard long tradition of animal exhibits, a demolition derby and tractor pulls, Conley said it is important to offer something for someone every night.
"It is super important. We want to do what is best for the community and what is best for the fair. Sometimes it is a money issue, but we want it to be something the county comes together for and it is the event of the summer," Conley said.
That happened this year with a concert over the weekend featuring Jordyn Mallory, who had appeared on American Idol Season 11 and Farmer Wants a Wife.
For Conley, this year's fair is her fifth on the board and marks over three decades being involved not only in 4-H, but the Parke County Fair.
"I really like the memories and the relationships, the day to day things the children do, and you really do see the goodness in people. The core values are still there, but I think a lot of people and have had to adjust things. We want to still do a family fun event that is affordable and the values are there. Agriculture and learning, even if you aren't working on the animal 4-H project side, there is something. We want people to come out and have a great time," she said.
On July 15, Barrel Racing Buggies will take place at 7 p.m., The National Night Out will be held July 17, there will be a truck and tractor pull Friday night, as well as the demolition on July 19.
"We have so many fun activities. There are so many things for families," Conley said.
The Parke County 4-H Fair is free to attend, according to Conley.
"We try to make it as free or affordable as possible. There are a lot of things to see and do, and the food. Just come on out, whether it is 10 minutes to grab something or spend some time with us. I encourage anyone to just come on out. Look a 4-H person up and ask about their animal. We love to share," Conley said.
