Emergency officials continue to deal with an oil spill in northern Lawrence County. According to information released by Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Joe Calvert, his department was notified of the spill on the Embarras River north of Lawrenceville around 8 a.m. Friday. An extensive search of the waterways in that area found that the leak was near Petrolia located 5.5 miles north-northwest of Lawrenceville. The areas affected by the release were along the Embarras River from Petrolia south to Billett and Muddy Creek from Petrolia south to it's entrance into the Embarras River. At this time, there are no known health and safety concerns to the public and the release has not affected the local drinking water supply. The Lawrence County EMA is working with both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), Illinois Department of Conservation and Natrual Resources and the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to mitigate the incident. Additional information will be released as necessary.
