NIPSCO is reminding customers that energy assistance programs are now open for enrollment ahead of the winter heating season.
Eligible customers can apply through May 31, 2027, or until funds are exhausted. The programs provide a benefit of up to $500 per year to help cover NIPSCO residential gas utility bills.
NIPSCO offers several programs designed to help eligible households manage their energy bills:
- NIPSCO Hardship Program — Assists customers whose income is between 151% and 250% of federal income guidelines.
- SERV (Supply Energy Resources to Veterans) — An income-eligible program for active military members and honorably discharged veterans with a past-due NIPSCO residential gas account.
- SILVER (Seniors in Indiana Low-Income and Vulnerable Energy Resources) — Available to NIPSCO senior customers aged 60 and older with an active residential gas account. New this year, seniors can receive assistance with a past-due or current bill.
- LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) — Available to households at or below 60% of the State Median Income. Apply at eap.ihcda.in.gov or call 2-1-1.
- CARE Discount Program — Provides additional bill reductions of 15 to 32% for LIHEAP-approved customers, who are automatically enrolled.
Customers experiencing financial difficulties can also take advantage of flexible payment plans, including three-, six-, and 12-month options, as well as levelized billing and the DependABill program, which offers a fixed monthly payment for 12 months. A limited amount of energy assistance funds may also be available through local Township Trustee offices.
Because usage makes up the largest portion of the average energy bill, NIPSCO offers energy-efficiency programs, rebates, and tips to help customers manage usage and reduce costs. A full list is available at NIPSCO.com/SaveEnergy.
