102nd District Republican State Representative Adam Niemerg issued a statement this week on the three-year anniversary of the elimination of cash bail in Illinois and the implementation of the current pretrial release and detention system.
"The last three years have shown that ending cash bail was a huge mistake. I continue to hear from law enforcement personnel and criminal prosecutors on how the current system has failed to adequately hold defendants accountable when they violate the conditions of their release."
"I was opposed to this law three years ago and stand ready to support reforms that strengthen accountability and give judges greater discretion to detail defendants who pose a threat to public safety or are like to flee. The General Assembly should give these proposals fair hearings and a vote."
Among the proposed reforms:
HB1208-Revokes the pretrial release when the defendant is charged with another offense alleged to have occurred during the pretrial release period.
HB4907-Revokes the pretrial release if the defendant is charged with an offense that is alleged to have occurred within or outside of the state of Illinois during the release period.
