The newly created Marshall County Public Defender Board held its first meeting Tuesday afternoon in the second-floor meeting room of the County Building.
During the 15-minute meeting, County Councilman Brandon Schadek was elected president, and Tim Starr was elected vice president. The third member is local attorney Burke Richeson.
The Public Defender Board reviewed and approved the Comprehensive Plan, which details how the county will select, pay, and determine the workload of public defenders. The plan also states that the county will pay the expense for additional training for public defenders, and outlines the steps the county must take to receive a 40% reimbursement from the state.
A list of qualified attorneys was reviewed, and there was some discussion about whether the judges could run out of attorneys because of the qualifications and credentials required.
The Public Defender Board motioned to adopt the Comprehensive Plan and sign it on Tuesday, with the implementation of the plan for January 1, 2026.
