A little over a decade ago, Sabrina Aldridge was part of an initiative that sent books to an African library.
Now, in Greencastle, Aldridge and members of Busy Hands, Joyful Hearts is looking to spread literacy once again through certain parts of Africa.
"I remembered working on the African library project and how there weren't a lot of literacy resources in certain parts of Africa, and I felt moved to do the project here again in Greencastle with the group of volunteers I work with now," Aldridge told The Putnam County Post.
Alridge said the organization would like to collect 500 preschool through fourth grade books, in addition to resources like flashcards. Furthermore, she said Busy Hands, Joyful Hearts is looking to raise $375 to ship the items.
"People can get involved by donating new and gently used children's books at Gobin Church in the collection box off Simpson Street. We are collecting through March 1 and are looking to send the books on that date," Alrdige said, adding items can also be donated at the Roachdale Library.
As for why she decided to do the drive again, Aldridge admits she enjoys taking something that there is an abundance of and sharing it with another country that has very little of it.
"I enjoy taking something that may be discarded here and turning it into a precious gift elsewhere," said Alrdige, who noted she will also be doing a shoe drive in the spring.
If anyone wants more information or would like to get involved, they are asked to contact Alridge at 219-363-6005 or email at Sabrina.uk@gmail.com.
