The 2025-26 school term officially began Wednesday, August 13th for Lawrence County schools.
It was the first student attendance day for both Lawrence Unit #20 and Red Hill Unit #20. Teachers and staff in both districts spent the beginning of the week in various workshops preparing for the new year.
The Illinois State Police and local authorities in Lawrence County remind the public about focusing on roadway safety as children head back to school. Motorists should be on the lookout for kids walking and biking to schools. Unless otherwise posted, pedestrians have the right-of-way at school crosswalks. Be vigilant in school zones and obey the posted speed limits. Most posted school zones have a speed limit of 20 mph in effect from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on school days when children are present. Driving while talking or texting on a hand-held cellular device is prohibited and the fins for an infraction increase within a school zone.
Motorists approaching a stopped school bus with lights activated and sign extended must stop their vehicle before reaching the bus. It is hoped that following these school safety tips will help make it an enjoyable academic year for Lawrence County students.
