Indiana State Police are investigating a car - electric scooter crash that resulted in the death of a Kokomo man.
About 5:30 a.m. Friday, ISP Trooper James Wilkison, while on routine patrol, came upon the scene of a recent accident where a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
A preliminary investigation by Trooper Wilkison determined that a 2014 Chrysler Pacifica, driven by Tracy Turner, 51, of Kokomo, was traveling eastbound on Sycamore Street near 17th Street. Turner’s vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as Brisjonta Richmond, 21, of Kokomo, who was riding an electric scooter. Further investigation indicated that Richmond was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing, and that the electric scooter was not street-legal and lacked proper lighting.
Life-saving measures were performed at the scene, and Richmond was airlifted to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, Richmond later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The family of the deceased has been notified. Turner was not injured.
The information above is preliminary, and the investigation remains ongoing. At this time, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, though toxicology results are pending.
Trooper Wilkison was assisted on the scene by officers from the Kokomo Police Department and Ascension EMS.
