A 28-year-old Plymouth man faces reckless driving charges after allegedly racing another vehicle at twice the speed limit on a busy city street Thursday night.
Officer Fisher with the Plymouth Police Department was traveling south on Michigan Street near Harrison Street on December 4th when he observed a northbound vehicle appearing to exceed the posted 35 mph speed limit.
The officer activated his radar unit and recorded the vehicle traveling at 70 mph—double the posted speed limit on the roadway.
When Officer Fisher turned around to pursue the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated. The vehicle eventually pulled into the McDonald's parking lot at 2010 N. Michigan Street, where the driver was stopped and taken into custody.
The driver was identified as Jose Perez, 28, of Oak Hill Avenue in Plymouth.
According to the police report, Perez told Officer Fisher that the driver of a truck next to him was "teasing him to race them," apparently admitting to engaging in street racing on the public roadway.
Perez was arrested and transported to the Marshall County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of reckless driving.
