Johnson elected president of Shelbyville Common Council

Mike Johnson (photo) was elected president of the Shelbyville Common Council and Linda Sanders was elected vice-president.

The terms of the appointment are one year.

The seven-member common council remains the same in 2025. They are Kassy Wilson (R-1^st ward), Betsy Means-Davis (R-2^nd ward), Johnson (R-3^rd ward), Sanders (R-4^th ward), Thurman Adams (R-5^th ward), Denny Harrold (R-at large) and Chuck Reed (R-at large).

Wilson will continue her role with the council as reader.

The only change to board appointments was Means-Davis will replace Harrold on the Plan Commission.

In other council business Monday night at City Hall:

Rescinded the original Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter Interlocal Agreement, which had a wrong total amount being charged to the county, and approved a new agreement that must still be approved by the Shelby County Council later this month. The new agreement will bill the county a total of $268,138 in two payments of $134,069 due Feb. 1 and Sept. 1.
Repealed the riverfront license for BKMR LLC (Pudder’s) due to the restaurant/bar closing Dec. 31. The license is not transferable. Should the company open another restaurant/bar in the downtown area, it would have to submit another request for the license.

Board of Public Works and Safety

The Shelbyville Board of Works met Tuesday morning at City Hall and approved a property clean up at 569 W. Taylor St. The cost will be assessed to the owner of the property.

Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson, who is a member of the Board of Works along with Rod Meyerholtz and Tom Reaves, publicly thanked the Shelbyville Street Department for their diligent work clearing roads of nearly 10 inches of snow that fell over a 24-hour-plus period. The city has nine trucks responsible for 90 miles of road, according to Furgeson.

Furgeson, who expressed the same sentiment Monday night at the Common Council meeting, also thanked the police chief and fire chief for their departments’ work during the trying travel period.
