Drivers across Indiana can expect to see a heavier police presence on the roads this spring as law enforcement agencies team up to crack down on speeding and distracted driving.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) has announced its partnership with the Indiana State Police (ISP) and local agencies for the annual Safer Roads Campaign. From April 4 through April 13, officers statewide will work overtime to identify and stop motorists who are speeding or violating Indiana’s Hands-Free Law.
The increased patrols are funded through the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP), an ICJI initiative supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that provides federal funding for local traffic safety enforcement.
The push for safer driving is backed by sobering statistics. According to the NHTSA, Indiana recorded 249 speeding-related fatalities in 2023. Additionally, distracted driving accounted for 47 fatal incidents that year, though officials note that limitations in data collection suggest the actual number of deadly crashes caused by distracted drivers is likely much higher.
Authorities are specifically reminding drivers of Indiana’s Hands-Free Law. Enacted in 2020, the law strictly prohibits drivers from holding mobile devices while operating a motor vehicle. Phone calls may only be made using hands-free technology, such as Bluetooth or a headset.
To help prevent dangerous driving behaviors and avoid a ticket, the ICJI and ISP encourage motorists to follow these safety tips:
- Put the phone down and avoid multitasking while driving.
- Obey posted speed limits and adjust your speed for road conditions.
- Allow extra travel time, especially during busy commute periods.
- Keep a safe distance between vehicles.
