Eight state-run visitor information centers across the state of Illinois are scheduled to be closed at the end of September, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
In a statement, the department says that the way visitors to the state plan and access travel information has changed and evolved over the years, diminishing the role that the visitor centers play in providing services to tourists.
The closures are not financially driven, according to the agency. Operating the centers cost the state approximately $1.6 million annually.
The rest areas where the centers are located will continue to operate, and other services will be uninterrupted. The closures also will not affect any independently owned visitor information centers operated by local governments or tourism organizations.
