Tuesday’s girls basketball game with Plymouth at Culver Academy could be a preview of an upcoming 3A sectional championship.
According to Sagarin, Culver Academy and Plymouth would be the top two rated teams in the girls basketball sectional to be played at South Bend St. Joseph.
The pairings for the 50th girls state basketball sectionals were released Sunday by the IHSAA. The tournament opens Tuesday with Plymouth (13-6) in a rematch with John Glenn (14-8). In their regular season meeting on December 17, John Glenn squeaked out a 35-33 victory.
The winner will play Mishawaka Marian (4-15) in Friday’s first semifinal.
In Tuesday’s second quarterfinal, Culver Academy (16-4) will be heavily favored against New Prairie (2-19).
The winner will face the host school South Bend St. Joseph (12-7) in Friday’s second semifinal.
A ranked Bremen girls basketball team is the favorite at the 2A sectional at Knox.
Bremen (19-2), ranked #10 in the current poll, will play in the 6 p.m. sectional quarterfinal on Tuesday. The opponent is a one-win Jimtown team (1-19) averaging only 22 points per game.
Bremen beat Jimtown by 43 on November 15.
LaVille (14-6) received a bye and will play the Bremen – Jimtown winner.
Knox (4-17) will play Winamac (13-8) in the second quarterfinal. The winner will advance to play Career Academy (4-12) in a Friday semifinal.
Oregon-Davis will host a 1A sectional that features two teams with 15 or more wins going into the final week of the regular season.
Two quarterfinals will be played Tuesday. At 6 p.m., Triton (2-19) will square off against Argos (7-14).
Argos won their regular season meeting on November 12, 40-38.
In Tuesday’s second quarterfinal, 14th-ranked Elkhart Christian (15-4) will play Trinity Greenlawn (5-12).
Two more quarterfinals are slated for Wednesday. North Judson (16-4) will play South Central (Union Mills) (8-11) followed by Oregon-Davis (10-9) vs Culver (12-8).
