U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) penned an essay in the Spring 2026 edition of American Affairs on “Rebuilding America’s Sea Power.”
In his essay, Young writes: “This is an economic and national security imperative. Making ships in America again is no small project; it will take time and will require successful collaboration between both private industry and government. . . . But the cost of the status quo, surrendering the seas to a global adversary, moving our goods on their ships, and leaving our warfighters without a crucial logistical asset, will be far greater.”

Last year, Senator Young introduced the SHIPS for America Act with Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) to revitalize America’s domestic shipbuilding and commercial maritime industries.
