Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Decatur County that resulted in the death of a Greensburg man.
At the request of the Decatur County Sheriff, Indiana State Police Detectives from the Versailles Post are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in rural Decatur County. About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday two Decatur County deputies spotted a vehicle believed to be related to an earlier criminal incident in Ripley County. A Greensburg police officer responded to assist. The suspect in the Ripley County incident was believed to be in the vehicle and was also wanted on an active arrest warrant for an unrelated matter.
The officers pulled the vehicle over, which was occupied by two adult males and one adult female, on County Road 400 East just north of County Road 300 North near Greensburg. The officers positioned themselves to conduct a high risk traffic stop and call each occupant out of the vehicle individually. The passenger, identified as the suspect, exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and pointed the gun toward officers. The officers discharged their firearms toward the armed man causing him to drop to the ground. After quickly assessing the situation, the officers got the other occupants to safety and began rendering aid to the suspect who had injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. None of the officers or any bystanders were injured in this incident. Despite life saving efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.
The suspect was identified as Travis Manlief, 39, of Greensburg.
The officers involved were each equipped with body worn cameras that were activated during this incident, along with in car cameras in each of their patrol vehicles.
Indiana State Police Detectives are being assisted by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, Greensburg Police Department, Ripley County Sheriff's Office, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Coroner and the Decatur County Prosecutor’s Office.
