Fully aware that the city of Greencastle and Putnam County are in the midst of a housing crisis and a housing study is underway, Greencastle city officials got an update on a few potential developments during its August City Council meeting.
Greencastle/Putnam County Economic Development Center director Kristin Clary brought some positive news with her, telling council that the county is currently in the “throes of the housing study.”
According to Clary, a developer has been selected for a 120-unit apartment complex in the Seminary Square area near DePauw University. Seminary Square is a project that is part of the city and DePauw’s Green and Gold Together initiative.
However, the good news didn’t end there, as Clary said the addition of 94 units of duplexes and triplexes on South Street is underway.
“There’s lots of housing stock being added to the community in the next few years,” Clary acknowledged.
Clary’s office, as well as Greencastle Mayor Lynda Dunbar have been busy trying to draw investors and businesses to Greencastle, as there is plenty of available real estate.
Clary said there are 22 acres south of the Putnam County YMCA, as well as 36 acres owned by the Development Center south of Chiyoda USA that is prime for the picking.
“There might be somebody interested in those 36 acres,” Clary told council.
