Community Smoke Detector Day will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the Fourth Ward.
Community outreach will be the main focus Saturday as the Greencastle Fire Department, The Greencastle Professional Fire Fighters iAFF Local 5125, Greencastle City Councilman Vincent Aguirre and Black Lumber will all be partnering to bring smoke detectors to those in need in Greencastle's Fourth Ward.
Community Smoke Detector Day will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the Fourth Ward and anyone seeking a smoke detector is asked to email Greencastle Fire Chief Rob Frank at rfrank@cityofgreencastle.com.
"The local was looking to do more community outreach and we have done smoke detector drives in the past. With Vince being our liaison, we thought it would be good to do it in his ward. We reached out to Black Lumber and they agreed to help with the cost of the detectors," Frank told The Putnam County Post.
In addition, Frank said the smoke detector drive further pushes the mission and oath firefighters take. He said meeting citizens and teaching them about fire prevention is part of that oath.
"As firefighters, we take an oath to serve the public and that doesn't mean only when there are emergencies. Part of community risk reduction is outreach and being proactive," he said.
Frank said smoke detectors can be vital in helping a family escape a fire.
