Governor Mike Braun today recognized Indiana teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, celebrated May 4–8, and thanked educators across the state for their service to students, families, schools, and communities.
Governor Braun recorded a video thanking Indiana’s teachers for Teacher Appreciation Day.
“This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and it is a chance to say thank you to the people who work hard to help Hoosier kids get a great education. A great teacher can change the course of a student’s life. To all of Indiana’s teachers: thank you for your hard work and commitment to students. We are grateful for all you do for our schools, our families, and our communities.” — Governor Mike Braun
Governor Braun has made improving education and supporting great teachers a priority.
The Braun administration raised starting teacher salaries by $5,000 and required schools to spend at least 65% of state tuition support on teacher compensation, helping more education dollars reach teachers and classrooms.
The state now has universal school choice, giving every Hoosier parent the opportunity to choose the school that best fits their child’s needs.
Indiana is also seeing strong education results and we are grateful for the educators who helped lead the way.
Last year, Indiana’s fourth-grade literacy ranking reached an all-time high of 6th in the country.
Third-grade literacy scores also increased by nearly 5%, the largest increase on record.
Indiana also reached an all-time high graduation rate of 92%.
This year, Governor Braun signed into law a new ‘bell-to-bell’ restriction on student cell phone use in schools, to reinforce student focus and limit distractions.
Teacher Appreciation Week is observed nationally from May 4–8, with National Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday, May 5.
