The Fulton County Public Library will offer three free programs in October as part of its partnership with the Smithsonian Rural Library Program.
This month’s programs will explore the Appalachian region through natural history, outdoor adventure, and music.
As part of the partnership, the library offers virtual programming from Smithsonian Associates, the world’s largest museum-based education program, along with special local activities and events designed to enrich and engage the community. All programs
are free and open to the public.
All three October programs will be held in the Meeting Rooms at the Rochester branch of the Fulton County Public Library. Registration is not required.
An Appalachian Journey: Skyline Drive to the Great Smokies will beThursday, October 8, 4:30–6 p.m. The series begins with a recorded presentation, “An Appalachian Journey: Skyline Drive to the Great Smokies,” featuring naturalist and interpreter Keith Tomlinson. Participants will travel along one of the country’s most breathtaking scenic routes on a journey spanning nearly 600 miles of dramatic Appalachian landscapes. Along the way, the presentation explores historic sites representing centuries of human history, from Native American habitation to colonial settlements.
The program also examines the region’s remarkable geology, diverse habitats and extraordinary wildlife. From steep summits, ancient volcanic formations and granite peaks to dramatic gorges and freshwater mollusks, Tomlinson explores the Appalachians through the lenses of history, science and ecology.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Show and Tell will be Thursday, October 15, 5–7 p.m. The second program will feature local hikers who have experienced the Appalachian Trail firsthand. Invited speakers will share personal stories and practical information about preparing for a long-distance hike. The presentation will cover trail logistics, personal anecdotes, packing strategies and essential gear. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see examples of what hikers carry on the trail.
The Music of Appalachia is set for Saturday, October 17, 1–3 p.m. The October series will conclude with an exploration of Appalachian music led by Literacy Director David Hazledine. The program will feature live performance and recordings from the Smithsonian Folkways Anthology of American Folk Music. Hazledine will also share slides from a recent trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, providing a visual connection to the Appalachian landscape and culture that have inspired generations of musicians.
Earn a Smithsonian Passport
An additional feature of the Smithsonian Rural Library Program is the Smithsonian “Passport.” Participants will receive a printed passport card that can be stamped at each program they attend.
There are three Passport tiers based on attendance, and participants will have the opportunity to enter a year-end raffle for prizes. The Passport provides another way for community members to explore the library’s Smithsonian programming throughout the year.
