Finally.
For the first time since taking office over a year and a half ago, Lynda Dunbar may soon be talking about something other than construction woes along U.S. 231 in downtown Greencastle.
"I've talked about US 231 since the day I was sworn in and it will be nice to talk about something else," Dunbar told The Putnam County Post.
At last week's Greencastle City Council meeting, Dunbar told those in attendance there will be a short closure soon at Bloomington Street and then closures at intersections.
"They say it will be done in two weeks," Dunbar said.
The final portion of construction along U.S. 231 features the reconstruction of several sidewalks downtown, which Dunbar has categorized as unsafe since they were completed last year. In addition, a final coat of asphalt will be applied along Washington Street before the project will be deemed complete.
"I am excited that they are going to make changes to all the hazardous sidewalks downtown. They will be safe for people to walk on. Glad INDOT was willing to come in and fix those," Dunbar acknowledged.
When completed, Greencastle will be free of construction along U.S. 231 for the first time in over two years.
"It has been a long process. There has been a lot of construction, but I am glad that it is almost over. Jackson Street looks great. Our contractor will come in and put the decorative lights back in when they arrive. They did a nice job getting the curbs in. Some of the places that weren't great have been buttoned up," Dunbar shared.
In addition to U.S. 231, construction on East Washington Street between Wood Street and Percy Julian Drive near Greencastle High School continues to roll along, Dunbar stated.
"The gas company has three lines left to move and then the contractor will be back to finish the project. We anticipate that being done by mid October," Dunbar said.
