Individuals are using publicly available inmate information to contact family members while falsely representing themselves as Sheriff's Department or Detention Center personnel. Recent incidents involve requests for credit card information or money to purchase Apple monitors and other electronic equipment.
The Decatur County Sheriff's Department and Decatur County Detention Center will never contact family members requesting money, credit card information, or the purchase of electronic products.
Anyone receiving such a call should immediately disconnect and contact the Decatur County Sheriff's Department directly using its publicly listed telephone number to verify the legitimacy of the contact.
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and share this information to help prevent further victimization.
